Tetra are species of small freshwater fish from Africa, Central America and South America. You will normally see one of these colour little shoal fish in most aquariums due to their bright colours, small size and peaceful temperament.
They belong to the biological family Characidae and to its former subfamilies Alestiidae (the "African tetras") and Lebiasinidae which are quite different. Its hard to belive the neon tetra is related to the might Piranha.
Tetras are egg laying fish and usually deposit a larger number of eggs.
Most tetras come from areas where there is acidic water, but most are bred in Asia in neutral water, so are best in a range of pH 6-7.
