Barbs are part of a massive family of carp and minnow fishes with 2400 species. They fish come from all over the world, but the common aquarium species come from Africa and Asia.
Barbs are a popular aquarium addition but some are reknown fin nippers, especially the Tiger barb. Unfortuneately this has given the entire genus a bad name, as most barbs are peaceful rather than semi agressive. They are a wonderful robust shoaling fish.
They are a hardy fish tolerant of wide pH ranges but do best in slightly acid to neutral water, pH 6.5-7.0. They are best kept in a planted aqaurium with rocks and wood.
Barbs are easy to feed, eating anything they are given. A good flake food with the occasional bloodworm or daphnia make for a good diet.
All carps and minnows are egg scatterers. They will eat all the eggs they can find so must be placed in a net that allows the eggs to fall through.
